USDA Funded Program—Office of Advocacy and Outreach

Outreach and Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers Program

“From Discrimination to a Future in Farming” OAO Award # 59-2501-11-032

The Land Loss Prevention Project, (LLPP) initiated the “From Discrimination to a Future in Farming” Project in August of 2011 with OASDFR funding. Through “From Discrimination to a Future in Farming” project LLPP leverages its rich working history with several organizations with long experience in assisting and supporting socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers in accessing USDA programs and services. The overarching project objective is to, through outreach and technical assistance, increase equitable participation by socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers in the full range of USDA programs and services.

The project seeks to ensure access by socially disadvantaged producers in each area to USDA programs and to assist them in addressing any barriers encountered. To this end, the project staff will provide individualized assistance to producers in assessing their needs in order to accomplish the goals of accessing USDA programs and services.

The project, in recognizing the national trend of Latino farm workers transitioning into agriculture, aims to ensure that there is an opportunity to provide these new farmers with the means to access programs and services in a linguistically and culturally appropriate manner.

The team will also develop and share information on the overall numbers, both previous and current, of socially disadvantaged producers participating in USDA programs. The team will provide data on the class action lawsuits and claims processes, the payment amounts, and other relevant information needed to develop a positive understanding of the settlements. The goal is to determine what future actions are necessary to achieve justice and wholeness in rural communities. The project team will develop and implement a clear process and plan to reach and refer producers in need of assistance in targeted counties who may be eligible for any of the USDA programs and services.
